Student-Centric Note Taking Wiki Services.....

I know our focus is normally corporate training/e-Learning/learning management systems/training management systems but it is September and  everyone went back to school this month [I have used this excuse a few times already], but I promise, this will be the last one for this month[hey -- its September 28th :)]--Alright already...........Check out NoteMesh and stu.dicio.us  These are student driven wikispaces for posting and sharing notes.

Wow, and to think we all used to go down to the local campus pub that gave you free popcorn or peanuts, got a pitcher of beer, a bunch of glasses, shared our notes, and studied for hours :)  Go figure....

The impact of multitasking on learning....

September's not over yet, so I am going to continue on a bit in the back to school theme.......My parents always said that I should not have the radio or TV on while I was studying and I guess they were right, even back then........I Said, 'Not While You Study!' is a recent  article in the Washington Post by Jeffrey Ghassemi about a newly minted study  published in the Proceedings of the National Academies of Science (PNAS) done by from researchers at UCLA that looks at the impact of multi-tasking while studying.

It tells us all what we already know intuitively "that there's always a cost associated with multi-tasking" when studying.  They learned " that people can learn under either condition, but the way they learned [material] and the brain systems involved were different," said Poldrack. "For the task performed while multi-tasking, the subjects' knowledge was less flexible, meaning they could not extrapolate their knowledge to different contexts."

Its easy for us to get distracted even within the context of an online course by all of the multiple  learning helps, and discussions  available that are designed to supplement the material.  This is precisely why sometimes in e-Learning development, less is more.

I'll Take Learning for 500: Using Game Shows to Engage, Motivate, and Train (Pfeiffer Essential Resources for Training and HR Professionals) (Paperback) by Dan Yaman and Missy Covington

Book Description:
"I’ll Take Learning for 500 shows you how to leverage the excitement and entertainment inherent in game shows by using them to increase participant involvement as well as information retention and comprehension. This book will help trainers and teachers to select, create, modify, and employ game shows as a powerful, effective learning tool. The authors illustrate all of the many different elements that are required to make an effective game show—from writing effective questions to changing pre-existing game show rules, hosting, and creating new games. They offer expert advice on selecting the best game to fit the purpose of the training, tailoring and customizing it for a specific situation, and effectively presenting it to create a dynamic and exciting learning experience. The CD that accompanies the book includes several valuable game show templates that trainers can immediately pick up and use as a hands-on resource."

New AOL Homework Search Engine For Children

Its still September & since most of the kids have been back for just over two weeks now.......

AOL's StudyBuddy Offers a New Twist on Learning

AOL Launches StudyBuddy

Excerpt: "The Internet service provider has launched StudyBuddy, a new search engine designed for school children.

The website offers kids information that has been pre-screened by teachers and librarians."

Its underlying search technology uses Blinkx.tv search "to retrieve query text and multimedia results from a database of 350,000 online journals, encyclopedias, and other sites that have been vetted for accuracy and age-appropriateness for children."

The premium service is $5 a month.  Hmm....not withstanding any review of the product, its only $60 a year and as I remember it back in the day ;)  parents paid a whole lot more for a good set of encylopedias.
