Last week, the Wall Street Journal had an article about how some corporations are using wiki software in their organizations. The article cited Intel and SAP. The big potential problems stated are the quality and quantity concerns. Quality from the perspective that its not regularly monitored to be sure the information is correct. Quantity from the perspective that really only 1% of its users contribute content, while 99% use it.
As stated in the article, its important to remember that these tools are being used INSIDE THE FIREWALL. That means that people outside, just surfing the net, say throwing a search into Google, are not going to be able to access this information.
Funny, the article made me think about when Intranets were first introduced. Many of the same problems they discuss in the article are the ones they mentioned when Intranets were first came out. Just a new twist I guess, well, you know the old saying....Nothing new under the sun, even when it comes to the application of web 2.0 technology (please, don't flip out all you e-Learning 2.0 gurus......)
