A look at blended learning from the designer's, instructor's, and learner's perspective...

Multiple perspectives on blended learning design by Betty Collis, Anoush Margaryan, and Marc Amory

Abstract:

"Learning in the corporate setting not only relates to individual competence development but also to a demonstration of business impact and a contribution to the strategic ambitions of the company. An approach to learning design that blends generic principles of learning and instruction with strategic goals important to the particular context, anchored in a commitment to authentic and engaging learning activities is needed. We describe how a particular action-research partnership has developed such an approach to learning design, give examples of learning events that illustrate
the design, and then synthesize results of 12 of these events from three perspectives—the designer/researcher, the instructor, and the participant--in order to reflect on the lessons learned and apply them in an on-going way to a dynamic learning evolution. Although the experiences reported are from one global corporate setting, the research-based reference model used to steer this approach to learning design is by its very nature adaptable to other organizational contexts."

3 Million Orders And Growing...

One Laptop Per Child has 3 Million Orders

"Governments have ordered 3 million of the inexpensive yet rugged computers for schoolchildren through the One Laptop Per Child project, giving the nonprofit group enough volume to kick-start mass production.

The Cambridge organization would not disclose the countries that will be first in line for its $175 laptops when production starts in October. One Laptop Per Child’s leaders have said they had interest, if not firm commitments, from several countries, including Libya, Thailand, and Uruguay."

A Whole New Look At Summer School...Spicoli can now catch a wave and make up english class....

For those of you who may be wondering, Spicoli was a character who was required to attend summer school in the cult classic film, Fast Times At Ridgemount High, but I guess the perception of summer school is changing.....

Teens thrilled with online summer school By Adam Gorlick

The article suggests online summer school even benefits students with disabilities.

One of the student's parent states, "These online classes have been a blessing," said Carol Meerschaert, whose 16-year-old daughter, Claire, has an attention deficit disorder. The disorder kept Claire from passing English in her sophomore year at Fallon High School in Falmouth, Maine.

"She's smart, but her grades weren't showing it," Meerschaert said. "Now, if she needs to reread something or come back to it when she's ready, she can. And she's getting better grades."

Update One Laptop Per Child Initiative-Intel Joins the Board

Intel has agreed to join the board of the One Laptop Per Child Initiative.  They had been reluctant to support the initiative in the past because they " recently began selling its own child-focused Classmate PC, which is a more conventional machine than the radically rethought XO computers. The Classmate costs around $225, and Intel expects that to fall near $200 this year."
