e-Learning Assessment Strategies

Enhancing E-Learning Assessment and Evaluation Strategies

by Thomas C. Reeves Professor, Department of Instructional Technology, The University of Georgia and William D. Aggen CEO and President, LearnWright, LLC

Abstract:

"Three major changes are needed before e-learning realizes it fullest potential. First, we must expand our basic mental model of what e-learning is. Second, we must improve the quality of assessment within our e-learning products. Third, we must get serious about investing in rigorous evaluation of e-learning initiatives. This paper describes 1) a new outcomes-based mental model of e-learning, 2) innovative e-learning assessment strategies developed to meet training needs in regulated industries, and 3) a rationale for how enhanced assessment strategies can lead to better e-learning evaluation."

Does Senior Management Overestimate the Value of Smart People?

Found a good article up on Jim Kissane's Workforce Development Blog written back in July 2002 by Malcolm Gladwell of New Yorker Magazine called "The Talent Myth Are smart people overrated?"

Excerpt: ".........The management of Enron, in other words, did exactly what the consultants at McKinsey said that companies ought to do in order to succeed in the modern economy. It hired and rewarded the very best and the very brightest—and it is now in bankruptcy.  The reasons for
its collapse are complex, needless to say. But what if Enron failed not in spite of its talent mind-set but because of it? What if smart people are overrated?."

Oh, by the way, just recorded some great podcast with Jim Kissane for the SyberWorks  e-Learning Podcast Series and will be releasing them in the months to come.

Problems With Grading Online Examines...........

Online marking of exams 'faulty'

I talked with some staffers who have taught various online courses  for a local university and they seem to think that the problem with online grading originates with the institution.

They said that there is just not a lot of training available for online instructors on how to use the universities  system and how grading should be executed.  They  also said that online facilitators, the folks who in many cases do the grading when there are large sections of students, are not well trained or paid.  They also said that the universities grading policies were very not very clear and did not take into consideration the nuances of online education and the system the university was using. So it seems that the problems stated in the article may not be isolated to the UK.

Please note:

(The SyberWorks LMS is not positioned for the academic or university market, and do we compete in this area so the course management system they are refering to is NOT THE SYBERWORKS LMS.)

While we normally do not cover the academic e-learning arena, I found this interesting because  the intro seems to accurately portrayal of the life  of an academic using the latest technology to teach...
