Treating Different Workers Differently Really Works So Does Customizing Training Approaches Work Too?

In the past, we have had lots of posts on generational issues in the workforce and had a podcast on it through our SyberWorks e-Learning Podcast Series, but as a follow up:

FYI, There was an article in today's Wall Street Journal by Erin White,  Age is as Age Does: Making the Generational Gap Work for You, about how some managers are making use of a variety of different strategies pertaining to multi-generational composition of today's workforce.

The article cites the example of an eastern regional sales manager for NovoNordisk AS, who "has embraced an increasingly popular management theory:  To improve productivity, treat workers of different ages differently."

The article goes on to cite how he persuaded his employer to let young sales rep drive Jeeps while keeping traditional sedans for others or highlighting sales results by team over individual performance so 20 somethings feel part of a group effort, but also "appealing to the competitive street in older reps" by singling out top performers, reassuring "one worried 30-year veteran" by telling him, "Your an expert in what you do."  And it seems like its translating into results because sales numbers are going up.

Army recognizes the importance of training as a career path

FYI:  I saw this in the Wall Street Journal on Thursday June 19th. The U.S. Army is changing its promotions policies to benefit troops that are on training missions in Iraq and Afghanistan. Training foreign security troops has traditionally been perceived as a "career killer" within the Army. Young officers feared that joining these teams would hinder their chances of being promoted, as compared to soldiers serving on combat groups. Finally, however, it seems that the Army has come to recognize the importance of training.

Military officers now believe that training security forces in these countries is "arguably the most important military component" of the war effort, and a vital part of the exit strategy. It's also going to be crucial in maintaining peace in this area in the future. Army Chief of Staff George Casey states, "Our ability to train and operate effectively with indigenous forces will be a key element of 21st century land power. We need our best involved."

Well they certainly get it!

Mixed views on whether Internet slang or text short cuts will be the demise of language or just its evolution...

In a follow up to a post a post on 4/29/2008, WTH!... Slang and text shortcuts are showing up in school writing assignments... , I found another article which exposes a different side of the argument...

Is language dead or evolving?  By Carolyn Y. Johnson

Excerpt:

"A growing body of research shows electronic communications channels like instant messaging have created a kind of semi-speech - language that is between talking and writing. Some say it is evidence of evolution, not of decay.....

Contrary to the view that abbreviations and cute emoticons are at the radical edge of English language, the researchers found that the hybrid of written and spoken language is actually more conservative than speech alone."
