Ways To Reduce Your Company's Training Budget

Found this article while surfing my rss feeds, and given the state of the economy, I thought it might be pertinent...

Ways to trim learning & training operational expenses By Mohana Radhakrishnan

Taken from the article.......

  1. Consolidate and centralize learning technologies.

" Invest in delivery platform management technology, authoring systems technologies,  Learning Management System (LMS) optimize, customize or consolidate learning technologies."

  2. Convert ILT to blended or e-Learning.

"One of the key strategies organizations are considering is converting instructor led training to blended or e-learning."

  3. Optimize learning technology support and administration.

"This refers to the human activity surrounding a learning system namely, the administrative work going on within the training group. Software as a service plays an integral role here"

  4. Centralize services, not processes.

"Learning systems in organization is distributed and totally inefficient. That's because there are multiple people in multiple groups completing the same tasks or transactions, but doing it in multiple ways."

  5. Improve vendor management.

"Benefits are obvious if some type of vendor management program is implemented. Most of them are accomplished by simply reducing the number of vendors that organizations works with, but one of the key takeaways that we discovered was that a vendor management tool was necessary in order to improve how learning professionals interact and work with their vendors."

  6. Optimize learning operations.

"The real keys to improving business processes are audits and documentation. "

  7. Reporting-produce press data and more intelligence .

"In terms of reporting, cost and activity measurement is valid in some regards."

  8. Optimize training resource utilization.

"This is all about optimizing the utilization of classrooms, instructors, course materials and equipment."

  9. Run your training organization like a business.

"It’s critical to identify your training organization core skills and determine the true value to the company as a whole. If your value is not found in administration services or in technology management, then it might be a good idea to shed that work or find ways to seriously streamline it."

Three Tiered Approach To e-Learning Design and Development...

Designing and Developing E-learning Projects: A Three-Tiered Approach By Saul Carliner

Excerpt:

"One of the problems with Instructional System Design (ISD), the methodology that underlies most instructional design efforts, is that it takes a one-size-fits-all approach to projects. More specifically, as presented in texts and courses (and often, as approached in practice, taught), ISD assumes that all projects are new ones with equal levels of complexity.

In reality, a wide variety of instructional design projects exist. Some are new, some are revisions. Some revisions are simple ones, requiring either a brief update of information or a quick fix to something in error. Some revisions are more complex than new courses, more like historic preservations that are intended to bring a building up to code while preserving the crumbling exterior of the original structure. Some projects are intended for the classroom, some are intended for presentation online."

Curriculum Architecture Design

Guy Wallace has some good information on his blog, here is a post that may be useful to you.....

The Purpose of Curriculum Architecture Design

Excerpt:

"The Curriculum Architecture Design (CAD) process generates the overall design for an entire T&D product line. The design is high-level (macrolevel), systems-oriented, and modular. The design identifies
• Where (within the scope of the design) training needs exist
• Currently existing T&D that addresses the training needs
• Gaps where no existing training addresses the training needs
• Which gaps are high-priority and should be filled by new or updated training

In summary, the Curriculum Architecture Design process identifies all of the T&D that could be and then prioritizes efforts to build all of the gap T&D that should be."
