Is self-directed learning an important factor that leads to successful academin performance?

Exploratory Study of the Relationship between Self-Directed Learning and Academic Performance in a Web-Based Learning Environment

 By:

Pao-Nan Chou, PhD Candidate, Department of Learning Performance and Systems, College of Education, The Pennsylvania State University-University Park

Wei-Fan Chen, Assistant Professor, College of Information Sciences and Technology, The Pennsylvania State University-Wilkes-Barre

Abstract:

"........ The purpose of this study is to identify whether or not self-directed learning is a key factor leading to successful academic performance in web-based learning environments. The in-depth analysis and discussion of each study finds that the effect of self-directed learning on academic success in web-based environments is divergent among six case studies. Follow-up studies should exclude potential problems identified in this paper."

Is the Operation Function Bearing More of the Responsibility For Recruitment, Training and Development?

Jim Kissane recently had a very interesting post on his Workforce Development Blog about a trend that could potentially impact training in the future....

The Future Workforce - Predictions about the New Role of HR

The post discusses how the role of HR is changing.  Here is a nugget that is particularly of interest.

"They [upper management] question why operations people increasingly are shouldering a bigger part of the burden of recruitment, training and development and retention.  In my opinion, it isn't the HR department's fault per say, but rather the organizations inability to see that major structural changes are occurring that is morphing the traditional HR role into something new."

The post goes on to mention ten points on how potentially HR will change moving forward.  It's a good list, I guess all I can say there is I hope so because it seems they would be beneficial, but its not my area of expertise, so I cannot say for sure.

I will comment on the quote above.  In my opinion, the reason you have operations people taking on more of the burden of recruitment, training and development is because it is more likely to impact their actual compensation than say 'HR's' compensation.

For example, its highly probable that a plant manager's compensation is directly related to the many metrics that are used portray how well the plant puts out widgets.   Things like lost production time,  quality metrics, allocation of  resources, etc.  So you can bet that the plant manager, their head of quality assurance, floor supervisors, and other plant management personnel are going to be very interested and invested in facilitating and supporting things like like recruitment, training and development because the better the factory is run, the more money they make, they can move up, are recognized, etc.

Not always the case when it comes to the HR function in terms of how they are measured/compensated in regards to their performance.

The Value of a SCORM Compliant LMS...

Here is a post,  The SCORM LMS: Compliance for Your E-learning Advantage  that talks about the benefits of SCORM compliant e-Learning and learning management systems (LMS).

While we have covered this extensively in the past, the post will help those new to the industry get their head around the concept.    Most of us in the industry just take the SCORM/AICC standard as a given, its important to remember that many organizations choose not to develop SCORM/AICC compliant e-Learning because its not germane to their business model or their needs.

The real deal in regards to compliance training

Here is a colorful, nuts and bolts view of compliance training...and I agree with his assessment why compliance training is done and necessary.  Its by no means a new idea to most of us who have been in the industry, but there are "romantics" out there that wish it was different, but its not.  He rants a bit, but hey, that is what blogging is for....

e-Learning Quality Standards....

Quality Standards in e-Learning: A matrix of analysis by Jia Frydenberg Irvine Distance Learning Center, University of California

Abstract:

Most institutions of postsecondary and higher education are creating or adopting quality statements, standards, and criteria regarding their niche of the “e-Learning enterprise.” In doing so, they have a tendency to reinvent the wheel. This article summarizes current published quality standards in the US, and analyzes and organizes them into a nine-cell matrix. It concludes with discussion of emerging issues with respect to the nine standards-areas.
