I came in this morning to find an email from Brandon Hall espousing what they say a great course is, and of course, its connected with some award they have given out & a report pdf you can buy
A few weeks back, I had posted this on my other blog, The Online Training Content Journal, about another group that has a Rubic for Online Instruction up on the next which has some good information on this subject, you just don't have to pay for it I guess.......
I would bet that if you examined the concepts in both you would find alot of the same underlying information, except, it looks like Brand Hall's report is more focused on the aspects of multimedia used in courses.
I think the question you always have to keep asking is, will XYZ level interactivity really help the learner achieve better results in terms of the skills you are asking them to learn to improve their job performance? Does your training department have the money for online course development to achieve XYZ level of interactivity? Is it really necessary for your learners to achieve the desired results?
Do you have someone in house on your team that can do this? Should you put the 395$ one spends for the Brand Hall Report and put it towards course development? 395$ may get you a few more flash movies in your course, but do more flash movies guarantee the learner learns the material to pass their certification test? Sometimes a greater lever of interactivity helps them learn better, but sometimes it does not.
I am not saying I know the answer because I think it varies with every business scenario, I am saying that I believe this is some of what the managers of training departments & those with profit and loss responsibility are thinking about.
